Old things

Writing yesterdays blog reminded me of something I hadn’t thought about in a long while. The electric typewriter. Well, I am sure that there must be many of you young things out there that have never actually seen one let alone used one! Oh woe me, not only did I use the electric golfball version but I was actually taught how to type on a manual! How old am I ……… How many of you remember some of the dinosaurs listed below?

  • manual and/or electric (golfball) typewriters
  • telex machines
  • plug-in switchboards
  • adding machines with the tally roll
  • record players, stereos
  • cassette tapes
  • LP’s and singles records (I have a whole toybox full that I am so loath to get rid of)
  • Slides – my dad used to take hundreds of ’slide’ photos and then we would all gather around to watch a slide show
  • wooden tennis racquets

OK – think about those and others that I may have left out. Take a trip down memory lane. I seriously think that I have given my age away here …..

    Yip, know the whole list.

My Dad still had an 8-track tape player in his bakkie. At one stage it became mine and I converted it to mains power for use in our games/playroom.

No idea what happened to it…

My husband has a whole collection of old LP’s and he would DIE if anything ever happened to them. I scoff at those young ones who don’t know the joy of a record!

Although I am only 31, I remember all that stuff. My parents hated waste, so we used all their stuff for a loooong time.
I loved my wooden tennis racquet. I thought it was excellent, and strong enough to hit that arsehole bully on the head with. Yeah!
Keep up your lovely blog, I am addicted.

I learned to type on a manual typewriter. When we got good at it, we were allowed to move up to the electrics. I’m 33, so manuals weren’t common anymore, I just went to a really poor school.

I suppose one day our kids will be laughing at the fact that they remember Ipods …..

Ginny … don’t you think we manual typewriter learners are about the best typists around. We HAD to use ALL fingers …

I came across an original ‘floppy disk’ at work one day while clearing out am old cupboard. I remember eing shown how to use ‘the computer’ when getting some work experience in an admin office and was scared to death of breaking it. There were racks and racks of floppy disks that contained about half a page of information on each one.

    How did we cope?
